Get Real! Get Color!

A simple, easy guideline on how to harness the mood transforming power of paint.

Color has a HUGE psychological effect on you and your visitor’s mood when entering a room. By using the color correctly, you can create a different atmosphere in each space with a simple color scheme.

Let the color wheel be your guide!

Red symbolizes fire, passion, and energy. It is the perfect color for a room where
conversations are had. Use red in a living room or dining room to bring out that
spark in your guests! Try using a neutral colors to soften the blow like browns or
muted yellows. Reds in the bedroom are used better as accent colors because if
you use them too directly on the walls it might be difficult to sleep.

Blues help to give that tranquil, peaceful effect. Being known that blues actually help
to reduce blood pressure and stress makes blues the perfect color for bedrooms or any
other space where you like to unwind from the day. Blues are great in rooms because
you can pair them with other variations of blues and don’t necessarily have to be toned
down like the reds do. If you are using a very saturated blue try using muted colors or
even greys to bring down the intensity.

Oh the power of yellow! Bright, cheerful yellow. Throw that splash of optimism into your home by
smartly pairing yellow with some richer oranges, reds, or even blacks and greys look fantastic
with this vibrant color. Be careful with this color, however, because if used too dominantly it can
cause the opposite effect and cause laziness and caution.

Another cheerful color on the wheel is orange. Though thought by some as too drastic, it is a
great color for bringing out your inner child. This color is great for creative areas such as
playrooms, work spaces, or even the kitchen! Oranges work great with a simple white but by
using earth tones it can have a much more homey effect while still being daring with your pallet.

Bring that costly spa feeling to your bathroom with greens! Nature comes to mind first with this
soothing and healing color; it goes great in bedrooms and bathrooms! Also green, being a color
we all could use a little more of in our wallets, has a great affect in an office area as well.

We can’t forget about black and white. Black has a sense of power and sophistication to it while white
is pure and innocent. Classically mixing the two is sure to have an impressive effect. Try throwing
in a splash of color with a rug or throw pillow to give it a very contemporary feel.

Finally, try mixing it up! Using complimentary colors (colors that reside on opposite ends of the color
wheel) really make your room pop! Especially when using the right hues and saturation.

For example, if you are using a really bright red, soften it up with a lighter green. If you
are using a deep rich blue or purple, use a softer canary yellow or orange.

So there are the colors and their meanings! Think about what happens in each room and which mood you would like to enhance!

Happy painting!
